5 foods you should steer clear of during your periods

Ever heard that saying - “the journey matters more than the destination”? Doesn’t it feel the same way when you are a week away from your period. That journey is god awful, isn’t it? You’re bloated, moody, puffy from your hormones going all over the place. A common trait among all humans is we turn to our creature comfort when we are distressed. So it’s not surprising when people go on a binge eating spree before and even during their period. But did you ever stop to consider that these foods, while providing that small ounce of comfort, are actually the reason why your PMS is likely to be alleviated? Here are five categories of foods that can make PMS a whole lot awful than what it usually is.

  1. Caffeinated Beverages
  2. Dairy
  3. Fried foods
  4. Carbonated drinks
  5. Processed Foods

    1. Caffeinated Beverages: Caffeine consumption during periods is linked to an elevated frequency of the premenstrual syndrome (PMS). When you’re on your period, it is best to turn down the volume of coffee or anything with a higher level of caffeine in it, as excessive amounts of caffeine could lead to mood swings, cramping, etc. An alternative to caffeinated beverages is hydrating yourself with water, green tea, soups, juices, etc.

    2. Dairy: Consumption of dairy when you’re on your period isn’t really a smart choice. Excessive consumption of dairy like milk, yoghurt, cheese etc not just leads to bloating but also worsens period cramps. An alternative to dairy is toned milk or buttermilk.

    3. Fried Foods: There’s nothing to be ashamed of here. We all love our potato chips but the excess fat and the salt can cause heavy bloating. Additionally, fried food can increase estrógeno levels - so you’re snippy, annoyed and irritable. Heavy consumption of fried Foods during periods can actually cause inflammation and worsen the mood swings as fried foods increase estrogen levels. Why not opt for roasted snacks, fresh salads, or crunchy vegetables like carrot and celery which can help balance your mood and also give you your daily dose of veggies?

  • Carb loaded foods: Experts say that a week before periods, your body’s hormone levels fluctuate, which leads to bloating. However, during periods, consumption of carb-loaded foods does not just worsen the bloating but it also makes cramps more intense.
  •

  • Processed Foods: Processed foods during periods may seem tempting, after all, who doesn’t love their instant ramen noodles? However, the unhealthy ingredients and preservatives added in processed foods can interfere with hormones causing more trouble. An alternative to processed foods is having homemade meals & snacks.

We all love a great binge but your body is going through enough stress while dealing with periods, so why not give it a little less to work on with healthy eating? Yes, we know the salt and the sugar are calling us, but trust us, your body will thank you for it with a comfortable and pain free period. Everytime.
