5 Menstrual Disorders That You Need to Know About
Even though menstruation is natural & common, we live in a society where it is not a so common topic of discussion, is it? The hoax myths, taboos and stigma around periods have kept many menstruators away from the knowledge related to menstrual awareness and the difference between normal and abnormal when it comes to their period cycle. But hey, you don’t have to worry anymore! Let’s properly discuss some of the most common menstrual disorders that every menstruator should be aware of.
Heavy Bleeding During Period
Could it BE any more annoying?
Don’t you sometimes suddenly wake up to heavier bleeding than usual and freak out over it? Bleeding is considered heavy when it’s over 80 ml a day and interferes with everyday activities. Imagine bleeding so heavily and having a FOMO on almost all of your favorite outdoor activities! Almost a fifth of menstruators are unable to complete their daily tasks while dealing with their heavy period. But why do we bleed so heavily? Well, it is caused by hormonal imbalances, fibroids in the uterus, other medical conditions such as thyroid problems and metabolism issues.
Amenorrhea OR No Menstrual bleeding
Be honest, don’t you all wish for a period where you don’t bleed? Me too! But it's not so healthy after all. When a menstruator experiences no menstrual periods at all, the condition is called amenorrhea. It is most likely linked to hormone-related issues if and when experienced in a menstruator who has turned 16 but still has not started menstruating. Sometimes it is a result of low body weight to delayed maturing of the pituitary gland. When a menstruator has had regular periods and then suddenly stops for three months or longer, it may be caused by estrogen levels.
Dysmenorrhea Or Painful Menstruation
As Rachel said, “No Uterus, No Opinion!” Literally, cramps are the worst enemy of every menstruator. Menstrual cramps affect the majority of menstruators at some point in their life. Dysmenorrhea, on the other hand, is a condition in which cramps are very intense and prolonged. The contractions in the uterus create the pain of menstrual cramps.
Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)
The “I am sorry I Ovary-acted!” phase. Don’t we all hate it when we’re asked if we’re cranky ‘cause we’re PMSing? But in reality, PMS is not just about being grumpy. PMS affects about 40% of menstruators to the point where it interferes with their daily lives. PMS can manifest itself in various ways, the most
frequent of which is depression. Bloating, headaches, weariness, sore breasts, fatigue, irritability, anxiety, mood swings, sobbing, and depression are some of the symptoms of PMS. These symptoms usually emerge around a week before your period and go away as soon as your period starts or shortly after.

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) is a severe form of PMS that severely disrupts a woman's life. The best way to describe it is like the difference between a headache and a migraine. Irritability, anxiety, and mood fluctuations are among the most frequent PMDD symptoms.
It is quite sad that many of us are not even aware of these disorders which can be severe if ignored.
